Fullerton Railway Plaza Association
The Fullerton Railway Plaza Association (FRPA) is dedicated to the preservation of
the railroad heritage of Southern California through the creation of a large
Interactive Railroad
Attraction in the City of Fullerton, California. This
facility will be unique in that it will embody many facets of the world of
Recreational Railroading, including preservation, restoration, archiving,
education, railfanning, modeling and many other interesting rail oriented
activities.
OUR VISION:
Creation of a large community supported Interactive Railroad Attraction which would include a Santa
Fe Heritage Railroad Museum (named the
Southern California Railroad Experience)
and restoration facility that would bring together business, government,
nonprofit organizations and community volunteers in order to preserve our
national rail heritage, enhance the city of Fullerton and provide an educational
experience for our youth that is meaningful, interesting and fulfilling. It will
host special programs, events, rail tours, exhibitions and interactive displays.
The plaza will create a new family oriented attraction in historic downtown
Fullerton.
WHY FULLERTON? Downtown Fullerton offers an area rich in the heritage of
early 20th century Southern California and is located within five miles of two
major southern California tourist attractions: Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm.
The Fullerton Railway Plaza will be located adjacent to the recently restored
Santa Fe Depot in the heart of the historic downtown district. There is plenty
of nearby parking and hotel accommodations.
ATTRACTIONS: The special equipment that will be on display in the museum represent the
finest and largest steam and diesel motive power and passenger cars used by the
railroads during the "Golden Age" of railroading. Preservation of historic rail
artifacts will be an ongoing process in the restoration facility. Other
facilities will be provided to accommodate "visiting" operational historic steam
and diesel locomotives.
The equipment will be displayed indoors in a simulated industrial shop
environment. Exhibits, meeting rooms and some retail establishments will be
included within the facility. The Plaza will also provide many dynamic and ever
changing exhibits, programs and displays that will serve to educate and
entertain the public.
Currently, many rail excursions can be taken from the Fullerton Depot. From a
short 35 minute ride to Olvera Street in Los Angeles or to San Juan Capistrano,
to a grand first class rail tour of the USA. These excursions will continue.
However, at the Plaza, one might opt for a short "virtual reality" train ride on
one of the worlds greatest trains.
BENEFITS: Some retail establishments will be located within the immediate vicinity of
the Plaza, however the nearby Historic Downtown Fullerton area currently offers
one of the country's highest concentrations of unique antique and specialty
shops, most connected together by pedestrian friendly walkways. The Fullerton
Railway Plaza will be on the south side of town and the, soon to be renovated,
Fox theater is on the north side of town. Between these two attractions is
Historic Downtown Fullerton.
In summary, the presence of a world class railroad oriented attraction, along
with a renowned interesting historic shopping district plus the diversity of
cuisine and atmospheres from local restaurants will make a day or night on the
town in Fullerton, a truly pleasing experience.
